Bug Description

Binary package hint: notify-osd

I've tested this with both Evince and Firefox.

I have an application open in full screen mode.
I switch to another workspace.
I run "notify-send" and no notification pops up. I am sad.
I take the application out of full screen mode and try again.
A notification pops up. I am happy.
I try again...
I take the application out of full screen mode immediately after requesting the notification.
The notification does not appear. I am sad.

Mostly, I am sad...

I'm confirming this, with a significant use-case. I have two monitors. I quite frequently have a full-screen gnome-terminal running on the second monitor, but my first monitor is still available for dealing with email, messaging, and whatever else needs to be done. Having a full-screen gnome-terminal on my second monitor prevents me from getting any notifications. This is very unfortunate, as my primary monitor is still quite capable of displaying these notifications, and I'd very much like to receive them.

This is an annoying issue for me on with precise (12.04)

I have several workspaces and dual-monitors. When there is one full-screen application on any of the workspaces or monitors, I do not get notify-osd notifications - this is a problem.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Trigger a notification and observe that it on the screen.
2) Open an application in fullscreen on workspace 1
3) switch to workspace 2
4) Trigger/receive a notification (pidgin, libnotify/notify-send, etc.)
5) Observe that no notification is displayed (this is the the issue)

I expected to observe the notification in step 5

I can confirm that this bug renders notify-send effectively useless for me, because I often have a terminal running full-screen (on my second display) which prevents any notifications from appearing (on my primary display). I'm running 12.04.2 LTS with Unity 2D on a laptop with an external monitor.

So, for example, in a (local) plug-in script I'm writing to display notifications from an application, I've had to disable notify-osd support, and instead look for an alternative mechanism.

Can anyone say whether this issue been fixed as a side effect of work on bug #1065425? They seem related.

[I should of course have said "notify-send" in my second paragraph above, not "notify-osd".]

no longer affects: notify-osd

Another confirmation that this bug still exists in 14.04 LTS: in the case of any full-screen application being either in the background, such as a terminal or Chrome, no non-critical notifications will be displayed upon any workspaces although the full-screen application is not in focus.

I confirm that the bug still exists, Ubuntu Mate 18.04, dual monitor set-up (pc screen + projector screen via HDMI). Notify-send + notify-osd works perfectly when no window is in full screen mode (F11), doesn't work nor on primary or secondary when there is a full screen window opened (doesn't matter if is on the primary or the secondary display).

To complete my last post I have to say that it works fine if the --urgency option is set to "critical".
