Bug Description

Binary package hint: notify-osd

Since an update earlier today the notify bubble stopped to fade out while my mouse hovers it.
When my mouse moves over the bubble it gets a black border filling the space around so it becomes a square.
Starting notify osd from a console does not provide any useful data thought:

** (notify-osd:21577): DEBUG: [2010-03-24T21:07:52-00:00, notify-send, id:0, icon:] test

** (notify-osd:21577): DEBUG: found panel (0,0) - 1280x24 on monitor 0

** (notify-osd:21577): DEBUG: top corner at: 1013, 22

I will attach a screenshot... guess that might help to understand the problem.

What you're seeing there is a bubble being displayed while the compositing of the wm (be it compiz or metacity+compositor) is disabled. Check that you're running with a compositing window-manger (aka "Desktop Effects" set to anything but "None").

My graphics driver (sis imedia) never supported any compositing but the bubble fully disappeared (not faded out as it does when there is a compositing wm running) when I moved my mouse over it since it was first used in Jaunty.
It was working fine, without fading, earlier today before I updated several packages.
I guess this is not what the bubble should do if there is no compositing possible according to lowend graphic cards.

This is a regression, and makes the notifications unusable unless I enable composition (which doesn't work for me). Previously the notifications would simply disappear on mouseover and let me not only read but click on things under them. Now they don't.

This is a regression. I have compositing turned off *intentionally*, and prior to some recent update the notifications could always be hidden by mousing over them. Having a floating window pop up over my desktop that I can't get rid of is a deal-breaker.

notify-osd itself hasn't updated since 9 March, so that's probably the wrong package to assign this to; assigning the Desktop Team for further triaging here.

Changed in notify-osd (Ubuntu Lucid):
assignee: nobody → Canonical Desktop Team (canonical-desktop-team)

It's been pointed out to me (thanks, Chris!) that this is a gtk+2.0 regression. Opening a task there and marking this as a duplicate of bug #546650.
