Thanks for taking time to report this bug and make ubuntu better. The problem you are facing is not a bug in indicator-sound. its a problem of notify-osd which only happens when the window manager is metacity(when compiz is turned off).

summary: - When we increase / decrease the sound that its bug the bar
+ flickers on changing volume/brightness when compiz disabled

This needs to be fixed we are gonna use metacity for UNE in Lucid

Changed in notify-osd (Ubuntu):

I don't have this issue with Ubuntu desktop and metacity compositing enabled. Could it be only related to UNE ?

If I recall correctly, I experienced flickering on Metacity when using fglrx as my graphics driver. Since I've switched to the open source radeon, it seems to have disappeared.

This also happens when compiz is enabled.

I don't think I'm seeing the same bug, this happens only when I use the Fn keys and keeps flickering until I switch away to a virtual console and back again. While it's flickering, it looks like gnome-panel hangs; No menus can be opened.
