Binary package hint: notify-osd
In trying workarounds for bug #507148 I disabled KMS and disabled compiz. Now notifications are unreadable. See attached screenshot.

I'm also affected by this bug also with a ATI Radeon Mobility 7500. I'm running Karmic though.
