I used the software updater after trying to update via Software and the progress bar hanged in the middle. I restarted the system and and then used software updater. The software updater also reported a failing at removing and installing some unspecified packages

Could you please try to update via the command-line tool:

sudo apt update
sudo apt -f install
sudo apt upgrade

Fixed it last night. Maybe I should've waited for your response. Never though it would be that fast. lol. Keep up the good work guys.

For reference:

It did a bunch of things:

sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt-get upgrade

And got :
APT had planned for dpkg to do more than it reported back (18 vs 22)

Then I did:

sudo apt-get install nginx-full
sudo apt-get upgrade

I don't remember what fixed it but it did get fixed. lol. Hope everything is ok.

You should be fine. You can run one more "sudo apt -f install", which means "fix it if there is something wrong".

I'm going to mark this bug as a duplicate of #1679435 since the symptoms match: the graphical updater got stuck mid install. There was probably a debconf prompt,
