Bug Description

I've just installed the 12.04 Beta 1 on a Asus EeePC 1005 PE using the alternate cd. However, I can't connect to any wireless networks using the GUI. When I right-click on the network icon on the titlebar, the option under "Wireless Networks" is greyed out and says "device is not managed".

I am successfully able to scan for networks using "sudo iwlist scan".
Here is my output
sudo lshw -C network

While using the live-cd the wireless network was available, the same happened when installing from alternate cd.

Best regards.

This bug affects me as well. I installed on a Thinkpad T42 using the mini iso. Similarly, I can scan for networks with
$ sudo iwlist scan
as expected.

As a workaround, I am able to configure my wireless network by installing Wicd and using that instead of NetworkManager.

I found this quote on the NetworkManager FAQ (http://live.gnome.org/DarrenAlbers/NetworkManagerFAQ):
"My Card is not recognized by NetworkManager and I am running Debian or Ubuntu:

Debian and Ubuntu modified NetworkManager so that it would not manage any devices listed in /etc/network/interfaces. If you open this file and comment out the lines for the interfaces you want to manage and reboot NetworkManager will see them. **Do not comment out l0**"

When I checked /etc/network/interfaces, I saw that my card was listed there. After commenting it out and rebooting, NetworkManager was now able to manage my card, but there seemed to be numerous other issues with the NetworkManager applet. eg: all the WPA networks were greyed out (my card supports WPA/WPA2) and nm-applet died with SIGABRT when I clicked on "Create new network" (See bug #949441). I don't know if all of these issues are related or not.

My details:

I've only tested 12.04 beta1 from a live USB stick, but there definitely seem to be a problem when connecting to a wireless network with the ipw2200 driver. I have never before had any troubles with wireless in Ubuntu since I started using it in 2008. The wireless interface is named eth1 and it's been that way since 8.04

I'm suspecting that my issues are related to this since nm-applet crashes when I try to connect to a wireless network from the control panel app (gnome-nettool?) When clicking the network indicator all secured networks are 'greyed out' and only unsecured networks are clickable.

If I create a new network connection by running 'nm-connection-editor' and manually enter my details I get connected, so the hardware is working at least.

We fixed this in an upload past the Beta 1 release. You may want to try this out with a recent daily image (or it will be included in Beta 2).

Closing as Fix Released.

FWIW; ipw2200 has nothing to do with this. If you're having issues with an Intel card using the ipw2200 (Calexico2 and others); please see bug 908380
