network-manager should not set offline mode when it manages no device

network-manager (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gaim

Apple PowerBook G4 (5,4)
Ubuntu 7.04 (PPC) up to date as of 07/02/07
Broadcom 4306 with bcm43xx wireless driver
gaim 1:2.0.0-beta6-1ubuntu1

Gaim continually says "Waiting for network connection" and never actually connects. This is probably because network-manager is broken and doesn't detect any network, but gaim should not be dependent on this.

Thank you for your bug. Do you have any device managed by network-manager? That looks like a duplicate from bug #82335

Yes, an apt-get upgrade installed network-manager some time ago, but this package does not seem to do anything except cause other desktop components to stop functioning.

Perhaps network-manager should be removed from the distribution if it cannot be made to work and only serves to break the rest of the desktop.

You are not forced to use an unstable distribution, bugs happen and are fixed, we don't remove package every time somebody finds a bug or we would not have many softwares that can be used. Comments like that one are not useful, marking the duplicate duplicate
