Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hallo,

[Situation]

Hi,

[Situation]
I use a dial up connection via mobile phone (cell phone modem) as Internet connection.
Built by Gnome-PPP (gnome-ppp), because the modem manager (modem manger) since Natty is no longer able to reliably detect my modem and connect accurately and reliable.

The Network Manager in recent versions (and current) does not recognize any of Gnome-PPP (package gnome-ppp) established connections.
This causes different side effects in the following packages:

- Update-manager:
[Expected] Download and display the change log of the selected update
[Bug] Change-Log of changes on upgrades can not be downloaded because the response of the network manager does not indicate a current network connection.
However, the actual updates are downloaded and installed correctly.

- Evolution:
[Expected] connection, review and download e-mails when new ones are available.
[Bug] Evolution automatically goes into offline mode, since the response of the network manager does not indicate a current network connection.
From offline mode can not be manually switched to online mode from the main menu either.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

Please note that NM won't follow the status of Gnome-PPP, so in this regard it would be a "Won't Fix"

Thanks Mathieu for your response,

The major problem, why I use gnome-ppp and not the NM, is that N-M cant
handle my cell-phone modem correctly
instead of Maverick brefore.
There is onlya chance of 1% that N-M resp. Modem-Manager can establish a
connection with my mobile, instead of gnome-ppp.
In Maverick it works mostly fine.

I would really like to use N-M instead of gnome-ppp, because I had to stop
N-M service to check my mails and downloading the update notifications
within update-manager, which are otherwise been deactivated as I described
before.

The backdraw of deactivating N-M is that I cant use my WLAN-Connections too
