Binary package hint: network-manager
It (sometimes) takes quite a few tries to connect with my 3G modem. It it seemingly random, sometimes it connects right away, sometimes it takes up to 5 tries. It claims to be connected every time, but Firefox doesn't even try for a second before declaring that the server is unreachable.

I'm experiencing this issue too.
I can't get my Huawei E220 modem connected on Karmic RC.
However, I can connect through my Nokia N95 phone.
