Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I'm getting frequent wireless disconnects in 8.10 running prism54pci drivers when other wireless clients are not losing connections. I have adjusted the beacon interval and DTIM values in the router with no success. I have seen others with this same problem in the past, however I do not find any solutions.

I am also seeing something similar, no idea if it is the same thing. When using vpnc, Network-Manager frequently looses the connection. On one occasion it crashed (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/302394) and once the applet in the systray disappeared the wireless connection became stable again. The wireless card is an IPW 4965 AG in a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p.

Two more points here. First of all, the wireless access points shown by network manager seem(ed) to multiply regularly - with each one being shown three or four times in the list after NM had been running long enough. Does the original reporter also get that? Secondly, I switched from using vpnc to using network-manager-vpnc yesterday evening, and have so far (touch wood) not seen either the disconnects or the duplicate APs in the list.

no, I don't have your issue. My problem started AFTER there was an update, I never got it working right after that update. So I decided to do a fresh new install because it was working before the update, but not after that update. After the fresh install, the problem has not re-appeared. It is holding the WIFI connection flawlessly now for some unknown reason. I have no clue what went wrong that started the issue, but the fresh install seems to have corrected my issue for now. I have noticed that there have been up to 3 network-manager-gnome updates now since I first reported this issue, maybe one of them resolved my issue but needed a fresh install too correct what ever had gone wrong. I believe that you might very well resolve your issue by doing a fresh install. its a pain I know, but if its an uncorrectable problem in place, then it would at least rule out the possibility of an uncorrectable/identifiable configuration issue.

Not getting this now that I am using network-manager-vpnc instead of network-manager and vpnc. Since the original reporter can also no longer reproduce this, I suggest that the bug be closed, and we can re-open it if necessary.

No, seen this again, while I was not connected to the VPN. I will upload a screenshot of the NetworkManager menu. Note that just after the reconnect the three sections showed different sets of access points (the third was a subset of the second which was a subset of the first - or was that the other way round? :) ).

I can't find any way to get rid of the duplicate connections seen by network manager. I tried killing everything on my system with [Nn]etwork[Mm]anager or nm in the name, restarting networking and restarting network manager and the panel applet. No go. Strange.

At least the issue I have been having (don't know about the OP) is a duplicate of #262974. It was caused by dkms, which contains a call to "udevadm trigger", which causes the kernel to resend udev events for all hardware, including network interfaces, which hal then dutifully adds (again!) to its list. When NetworkManager sees the new devices it drops all connections and reconnects to the "new" interfaces.

I thought this problem was resolved for me by simply doing a fresh install, however this does not appear to be the case. I found another bug report that is similar to this bug report and posted to that bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/281711

I don't do compiling as the wiki link above says, so I won't be providing log info as the poster wants. I'll be happy to try to help other wise.

This is what I wrote in the other bug report that felt more like what I'm experiencing.

I too have this problem, however I am not sure the details are the same. As stated, when system setting is checked for a wireless connection, upon reboot the status is reverted to the previous state where its unchecked. this results in frequent connection/disconnection from the AP. The symptom however goes away if a checkmark is placed in the system setting box, BUT NOT rebooted. Then it returns on the next re-boot. I have deleted the connection several times and re-created a new one but nothing seems to fix this issue. I have also gone in to authorizations and explicitly added my self to the system setting network-manager with no restrictions and that does not resolve the problem either.

Of interesting note however: when I preform a clean install of 8.10, AND the wireless drivers are available DURING install AND wirelessly connected to the AP, Then everything seems to work as it should, the connection does get saved as a system setting and no disconnects happen. the only time I seem to have this problem is after the fact CHANGES to the wireless connections. So in short, this system setting only works during initial install IF all the details of the connection AP are known and working.

this is probably a driver issue. if you have a chance to test jaunty RC CDs, it would help a lot to confirm whether the issue is fixed or not fixed there.

Yes, if you could please test the latest Jaunty Release Candidate that would be great. You should be able to test using a LiveCD. Please let us know your results - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . Thanks.

It's the same problem with Jaunty Beta. I'm using Acer Aspire One A150. I have blacklisted acer_wmi, and i'm now waiting to see if the wireless is disconnecting or not.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.04). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
