Recent Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 install (last week or so)

Installed network-manager-pptp
Created a PPTP Connection and entered the username and password
Connection failed as above due to "unable to find valid VPN secrets"

Upgraded network-manager-pptp to 0.7~~svn20081015t024626-0ubuntu1.8.10.1

Network Manager continued beyond the original failure point
Other problems are preventing a connection, but this bug appears to be fixed.
