Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I tested this device and it does not get recognized by nm-tool

I'm running Intrepid with the NM PPA Activated (system updated today). I attach the lshal output so you can see the devices and check what is not working and why :)

Keep up that good work!!

I have an Option Globetrotter HSPDA modem, and it IS working... but I had first to make some adjustements for it to be recognized as a modem and not as and usb disk.. Model is "Icon 7.2" and I'm using it with orange provider in france.

I have also tried to deactivate the usb disk part. It does not jump as a
drive in Gnome anymore as it did before.

Can you see (out of the lshal file) if mine still gets recognized as a USB
storage device?

I'm willing to try things here, it's just that I believe that out-of-the-box
does not involve tweaking ;)

Christophe, please share what you did to make it work.

Sorry.....

Ok, first I had to change a few things for the modem to be recognized as a modem (th first time it is plugged it is detected a s a storage device).

Since It was quite some times ago, I'll sum up with a few infos I got with a few web searches.
The most complete informations a got came from here :
http://blog.mknux.org/index.php?post%2F2008%2F07%2F25%2FConnexion-3G%2F3G-sous-Linux-via-Globe-Trotter-Icon-II

To sum up :
1- you need to install usbmodeswitch
2- you need to create some new udev rules :
   create a file /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules
   and insert in the file :
BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="1000", SYSFS{idVendor}=="05c6", RUN+="/usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch"
BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="6901", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0af0", RUN+="/sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x0af0 product=0x6901"

Now you should have it recognized as a usb modem. In fact if you check dmesg after inserting the modem you should have 3 modems (ttyUSB0, ttyUSB1 and ttyUSB2).

After that, I'm not so sure because I first configured it to work with NM 0.6.5 and had to make some changes in System->Administration->Network : modem setting in ubuntu to configure my ppp to use ttyUSB0.

The first times I tried it with NM 0.7 it wasn't working and it even crashed NM.

Then I changed again the settings in System->Administration->Network : modem to use another device (any other one should be ok).

And then, the next time i plugged my modem, It was really recognized by NM as a broadband modem and even had an 'automatic GSM network connection' selection in the NM menu.

I just had to click on it, insert the password for my provider (orange)...and It worked perfectly !!!

I hope this will help (maybe I should create an howto in th doc or something)..

A few more things...

I forgot to tell that I deactivated the sim pin code.

Sometimes I need to try to connect a few time before it actually works, I even sometime need to force restart of NM because I end up with a zombie pppd using ttyUSB0.

N95 works, so I'm editing the bugs tags.

The Option device is not being recognized as a modem, just getting serial ports (se lshal file). Works with HSO connection software for internet connection (it even asks for the pin code :))

nm-tool does not even see this device (neither does hal see the device as a modem).
