wireless connection drops despite full signal

This has been an issue since 14.04, but it is much more frequent now.

I have an issue where, despite seeing a full signal, I have no connection. when I try:

ping -c 5 google.com

I get

ping: unknown host google.com

and nothing that requires an internet connection works either.

But this works:

Once I toggle the hardware off/on, it works again without issue.
