fresh install of ubuntu 13.10 on asus zenbook ux31e doesn't ever shutdown properly

This looks like either a problem with network-manager, or a problem with your network configuration / hardware. Have you modified /etc/network/interfaces?

I have not modified the file. The contents are:

# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

got this problem with network manager on my 64 bit laptop since kernel 4.13.x
does not appear on my 32 bit pc
