Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I have an ASUS A6R laptop with Broadcom 4318 wireless. It wouldn't work under Edgy. I updated to feisty beta in mid-March and it worked until updates came through in late-March which broke it. Hasn,t worked since. I have a hidden ap and use WEP.

I was using bcm43xx driver which worked as stated above. I have now changed to ndiswrapper but problem is the same.

I can get it to work if I select 'Enable Roaming Mode' in NetworkManager and start the dhcp server on my network server. I can also see other wireless networks. If I disable Roaming Mode in NetworkManager I get no wireless access at all.

I think the problem is related to avahi? (not sure). If I do:
gp@gpmp-laptop:~$ sudo ifup wlan0
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
    invalid argument "my password".
RTNETLINK answers: File exists
run-parts: /etc/network/if-up.d/avahi-autoipd exited with return code 2

The "my password" above was actually my WEP passphrase.

I have the latest updates. Other details follow:

I can back this bug. It seems I have never been able to connect using Ubuntu's Networking Administration tool. I can now connect using Network Manager, but before using Network Manager, I was experiencing avahi problems.

I don't know what avahi is, but the terminal would spew out an error related to it.

One further detail which may or may not be related. When I login from gdm screen to gnome desktop (wireless setup with Roaming disabled & static ip -- so wireless not working as described above -- & wired eth0 physically disconnected -- so no outside data communication at all), desktop loading is very slow (maybe 10 times slower than when some network connection is present). Also, desktop operation is slow ie. takes 10-20 seconds for a terminal window to open, takes 10-20 seconds for System>Administration>Network to open network manager.

The bug I describe above may be connected with other reported 'slow desktop' bugs such as Bug #94048.

Perhaps avahi is to blame here as well???

Further information & work around:

I have discovered that Network Manager writes the WEP passphrase to /etc/network/interfaces as plain text despite selecting Hex. I can get my network working with static IP iff I manually change /etc/network/interfaces and enter my WEP passphrase in Hex. The result of this intervention is the I can get wireless working with static IP but nm-applet no longer does its job and the routing table comes up misconfigured(ie. sends internal traffic to eth0 instead of wlan0. I assume nm adjusts this normally but my intervention stops this being properly configured at the time the network is being brought up). To have the routing table come up in a working form I have had to remove all references to eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces.

Also note: I now think that avahi error was a symptom & not the cause as I get no error message from avahi now. But also note that avahi enters items in the routing table which are irrelevant to my network - not sure if this is a bug or not???
I think avahi is entering this line in routing table:
169.254.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 wlan0

Also note: The above mentioned desktop slowdown is very real when I have no network connection (a common situation with a laptop). The effect is immediate once the network is lost.

I second this bug. It seems to still be valid on Gutsy Tribe 5

$ network-admin --version
GNOME network-admin 2.19.1

A somewhat messy workaround: Edit /etc/network/interfaces as described in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202834 .

for me manually configuring wpa network, works in
nm/network-admin. (latest gutsy)

Note that the slow desktop aspect to this which was reported by myself (2007-04-27 & 2007-05-02) are NOT related to this bug but related to another Bug #78263 .

ok ... I reread this bug. If you don't select roaming mode in gnome network-admin (this is what is open if you select manually configuration ... in network manager), then network manager will not manage that wireless device at all, because you "manually configured it". Thus, you will not be able to see other networks - actually you will see no results from that interface at all anymore.

I'm just a little concerned that I can't configure wireless using *network-admin* (System==>Administration==>Network) (as opposed to NetworkManager/nm-applet). I just don't seem to get the actual connection (though there is no UI that tells me that).

This is how I interpret this bug -- network-admin does not work(?) for configuring wireless -- one must use NetworkManager(?). Also, I think bug 124052 -- "network-admin/nm-applet disparity confuses users" -- is highly valid.

Why would I want to use network-admin for configuring wireless, when NetworkManager works well?

1) Because I want to configure wireless (using GUI) so that it uses WPA with static IP -- not possible with NetworkManager 0.6.5.

2) Because "I can" -- the UI indicates it should be possible.

Anyway, NetworkManager 0.7 will _hopefully_ be released in time for Hardy Heron. If that works out well, the whole network-admin part of gnome-system-tools can be removed, because all functionality in network-admin will be included in NetworkManager.. right? Is that the plan? That would be just beautiful :-)

That sounds like a network-admin bug then. How does it fail? Can't you
use ifup/ifdown afterwards?

Yes, probably a network-admin bug.. or a bug concerning some conflict between NetworkManager and network-admin?

I had actually not tried ifdown/ifup.. I'm taking the newbie-perspective here -- it shouldn't be necessary. (Actually I *am* pretty much a semi-newbie, so I'm really good at taking that perspective)

However, it works better today.. (after the big Gutsy-update?) Sorry. Me feel stupid.

I still have some problems with network-admin, but nothing that fits in this bug.

Well to help me figure out how to fix it you have to get away from the
newbie-perspective ... just to finally fix things so you can take that
position again :)
