The VPN connection worked using wired and wireless connections and NM 0.6.6. I switched to 0.7 because I couldn't use the VPN with the aircard under 0.6.6, I think because of this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/145107
