@Leprechaun: There must be more to it than that, because I see exactly the same options for openvpn in the 'ps' output for openvpn, but with a *working* redirect.

As has been mentioned in some previous comments, I found that setting the option "Ignore automatically obtained routes" sets the local route correctly.

It appears as if the sense of this option has been reversed. Without that option set, the routing table changes are not made on the client.
