Bug Description

Ubuntu 19.04, Wayland, Gnome shell, Dash to panel 31

Hello,

Every morning when I resume my computer, the notification panel is full with notifications about the VPN I use for daily work. The notification are emited at system resume and VPN connection loss.
It makes my system laggy when I open the notification panel and I miss the other notifications because they are lost in the stream.

Could you keep only one or two notifications about the connection loss ?
There is also room to improve notification display performance because it seems to be restricted to the 30 last ones, but my mouse still becomes jerky when the notification panel is open.
Thanks for your incredible work

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1870043/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Thank you for your bug report, could you add a 'journalctl -b 0' log after getting the issue?
why did you make it impact gnome-shell-extension-dash-to-panel, is the issue only happening when using that one?

Please see the attachment.

I just tested with dash to panel disabled, the performance slowdown remains (2 or 3 seconds before the notification panel opens, and the the mouse is jerky when passing over the notifications).

So I think there are 2 issues :
- too many network notifs with network-manager-openvpn
- gnome slowdown when there are many notifications

I don't know if this is related, but network-manager-openvpn doesn't deal correctly with the DNS configuration, so I currently modify manually /etc/resolv.conf to add my enterprise DNS servers IP addresses once I'm connected (with a keyboard shortcut).
This means that after the VPN connection, the DNS might be the wrong one for a few seconds/minutes.
I made this script : #!/bin/bash
echo -e 'nameserver SERVER1\nnameserver SERVER2\nsearch lan' > /etc/resolv.conf
