Bug Description

On a freshly installed Ubuntu 16.04 (with the network-manager-openvpn package installed), the "Import OpenVPN Connection" option is missing from the list of VPN connections you can create. Look at this screenshot:

16.04 is missing OpenVPN options:

Using 14.04, here's a screenshot of what you should see:

Normally, at the bottom of this list, is an option to "import an OpenVPN configuration file", that upon clicking, provides an easy GUI interface for importing and open vpn configuration.

Do you have the network-manager-openvpn-gnome package installed?

@Dan: I know that I did NOT explicitly install
 network-manager-openvpn-gnome

However, I did install:
network-manager-openvpn

In previous versions of Ubuntu, installing network-manager-openvpn only would ultimately get the Open VPN options into the Applet/Indicator.

Currently, I've downgraded to 14.04.4. and cannot immediately test to see if installing network-manager-openvpn-gnome will work. Is it working for you?

I've confirmed that Dan's solution works for me. Thank you Dan!

In versions of Ubuntu prior to 16.04, you installed it like this:
sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn

In Ubuntu 16.04, you install it like this:
sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn-gnome

I'm seeing this behaviour on a freshly installed 16.04 unity and on a different freshly installed 16.04 MATE.

I did install;
sudo apt-get install openvpn
sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn
sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn-gnome
sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc
sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc-gnome

On MATE it gave me an error telling the config wasn't correct, but on the unity install it says;
The file '<email address hidden>' could not be read or does not contain recognized VPN connection information
Error: Key file contains line 'client' which is not a key-value pair, group, or comment.

sudo openvpn vpnconfigfile.ovpn works, so the config file seems to be correct. I can also create the vpn config manually, so it's just the import that doesn't work correctly. This worked fine in 15.04, 15.10 with the same .ovpn file. Let me know if i can do some more troubleshooting.

actually the error it gives me in MATE is;
The file '<email address hidden>' could not be read or does not contain recognized VPN connection information
Error: the plugin does not support import capability.
