Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

We had a little discussion on the ayatana mailing list a few months back (forgive me for not going through the archive and finding the thread) about the usefulness of having a vpn option in the network manager applet.

In its place the users should just go edit connections>vpn and edit it from there. The rational is fairly simple and that is most users dont have vpn and it only adds an extra click to get to the vpn options anyway.

Shouldn't that be reported against network-manager?

Reassigning to network-manager-applet since it's really what serves as a client for the NetworkManager backend...

Sounds like a fair change, but one we'd benefit greatly from upstreaming. That said, it's only one item in a usually small submenu, so we should then also remove "Disconnect..." from the menu when there are no connections... and then the VPN submenu altogether if there are no VPN connections configured. This will definitely need discussion upstream so I'll try to write a draft patch to propose to the developers.

Needs to be fixed but should ideally be enabled/disabled at runtime (along with other debugging messages) through an environment variable or parameter. I'm unassigning this for now because I don't expect to have time to look into it just yet.

Unassigning, I'll get to this for next release, by fixing up the interface for nm-applet upstream.
