signal strength icon not visible against dark backgrounds

If I switch by Gnome theme to one with a dark panel, such as the lucid default, the signal strength display remains black and grey which is unreadable against the black background.

When I switch from Radiance to Ambiance, the dark signal strength icon remains for a second or two, then switches to the light one.

The icon switches instantly for me. Is there anything else you can think of that could explain why there is a delay?
