nm-applet keep disappearing with ubuntu-mate raspberry pi

I am using raspberry pi 3 with ubuntu-mate 16.04.

The nm-applet keeps exiting and disappering all the time and i cannot connect or disconnect my internet connection.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Unable to launch nm-applet using the i3 window manager. No issues with XFCE. Same error as reported previously:

Can confirm this is still a bug on Mate Desktop Environment 1.12.1.

No Wi-Fi/Networking widget in the system try and running "sudo nm-applet" causes this response:

One followup... I plugged into an external USB wifi adapter and the nm-applet suddenly reappeared in my system tray.
