3) What I expected to happen was the .tiff file I scanned via a HP 5610v All-In-One Printer/Scanner using the xsane GUI, became text searchable.

4) Instead, when I entered the desired command as per the GNU Ocrad website:

http://www.gnu.org/software/ocrad/manual/ocrad_manual.html#Image-Format-Conversion

I got the following:

tifftopnm test-0002.tiff | ocrad
tifftopnm: don't know how to handle PHOTOMETRIC_YCBCR
ocrad: end-of-file reading pnm file.

This is not a bug in ocrad. The problem is your tiff image includes a feature not supported by your "tifftopnm" program, which belongs to the "netpbm" package (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+package/netpbm).

Regards,
Antonio.

I am not technically equipped to troubleshoot this bug, and from upstream's E-Mail response, it is more a user unfamiliarity with esoteric dependencies, not a bug. Seems more of a "wishlist" to further streamline ocrad for commonly desired functionality and ease of use.

This bug is a unfamiliarity with how to use OCRAD. No documentation exists through a search via www.ubuntu.com Hence, this is more a request to boil down the OCRAD manual ( http://www.gnu.org/software/ocrad/manual/ocrad_manual.html ) into something more streamlined and easy to understand and use. Can we please have some official Ubuntu documentation and examples?

This is still an outstanding issue, that was frankly, never addressed in a satisfactory way and I felt compelled to see it dealt with.

This is a wishlist at worst and should be marked as such.
