Java swing demo application has the same issue when choosing GTK+ look. Workaround is to launch netbeans (or java swing demo) with command line option: "netbeans --laf Metal". This way it will look ugly and does not blend well with overall desktop but at least menu is readable.

Still affecting 7.1.1. Even change of jvm from openjdk 6 to oracle's v7 didn't help. Best workaround for me so far is to change ubuntu theme to Radiance.

This seems to be a issue Netbeans has with "dark menus" or Toolbars. This happens on every theme with a dark menu I've Tested So far. Ubuntu's Default included.

I'm not sure, Does any one think can we can specify any variables differently to make it work?

I'm 80-90% Sure Netbeans uses/makes it's self look like your GTK2 theme.
My experience of Apps that "Clone or copy" your theme are they may need to be updated.

Netbeans appears to use the same or the wrong text color. It may need to be updated to use the right colors based on your theme.
For example inherit the text color of your " dark menu".

Either that or the transition to light menus in some spots threw it off? because it was using that theme variable?

The bug is confirmed by many people...gtk apps are fine in ubuntu so it's 99% a netbeans gtk laf related issue.
The related upstream bug which is currently a mess is http://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=210471.
Unfortunately the netbeans devs don't seem to get it and leave it as incomplete.
