i almost have the same problem but i use bcmwl5.inf file for my wlan card:

02:02.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

there is bcm43xx module that ships with kernel, which i remove with rmmod, after that

sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-utils-1.8
sudo ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
aldin@testing:~$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

aldin@testing:~$

and i have no eth1 or wlan0 (on dapper & edgy i had interface)

but now (herd5 03.march) i got no interface for my wlancard, btw i got no errors or warnings too (btw on dapper and edgy this procedure was ok)

only this get in dmesg (concerning ndiswrapper)

just to add, i've installed ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 and it is working!
kernel is 2.6.20-9-generic, now i have wlan0 interface which works

only "bug" is when i want to use ad-hoc mode, my connection last for about few minutes or sometimes even less that that... tested it few times, it repeats.

dmesg is pretty ok though...

Installed ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 version 1.30-1ubuntu1 and got the ndiswrapper kernelmodule loaded (I had to blacklist the rt2570 kernelmodule)

Now the rausb0 (no wlan0) device is present, attached wpa_supplicant to the device rausb0 and got the network working.

this is working for the kernel 2.6.20-9 and 2.6.20-10.

I'm running feisty 2.6.20-11-generic and have been unable to get my dell 1500n wireless working under ndiswrapper. But, the wifi works under edgy with ndiswrapper 1.3.1. On feisty, the latest update to ndiswrapper 1.38 should have fixed it, but now I get a strange error about 32-bit.

I'm having the same issue with an AirLink AWLL4030 (it uses the same net5523 and athfwdl drivers.

It looks like ndiswrapper 1.39 fixed this issue though:
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=495978&group_id=93482

Changes:
* An smp issue is fixed
* When initializing a card that supports 802.11a and either 802.11g or b, set
the mode to 802.11g or b, as 802.11a is far less common
* Added support for driver for Atheros device with PCI ID 168C:1014
* Fixed issue with initializing athfmwdl driver (for atheros USB cards)

(that last one looks like the problem we're having with the Atheros-based USB wireless adapters)

I tested the latest version 1.42 of ndiswrapper and it works now. I can plug and unplug the dongle with sheer impunity and the driver doesn't crash.

There is still one problem though: I cannot start the laptop with the USB dongle in. I have to wait until I log in, then attach the dongle.

Ok, one more update. I found something on the ndiswrapper mailing list archives:

Apparently, the way the hardware is, it requires a power off to reset the firmware. If you leave it in an reboot, it will not properly come back up. So, the workaround is to do a shut down if you want to leave the dongle in the computer. If not, you have to remove the dongle and put it back in when you reboot. I don't think it works properly if you leave it in while it is booting up, you need to:

sudo modprobe -r ndiswrapper
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

to reset it.

odolühi, use the latest ndiswrapper (currently this is 1.43) and uninstall the drivers and install the latest drivers from Atheros.

golfbuf, your problem isn't related to this bug, nor is it a bug. You have to use the correct driver. Use a 32bit-driver if you are running a 32it-Ubuntu (i386). (If you plan to use ndiswrapper under amd64, use a 64bit-driver.)

Garo, your issue sounds more like a network-manager issue, network-manager sometimes interferes with ifup/down.
Instead of sudo modprobe -r ndiswrapper; sudo modprobe ndiswrapper use sudo ifdown wlan0; sudo ifup wlan0 and report if this works.

I believe I had tried that earlier... I don't have access to the card / laptop now, but will try it out when I get a chance.

However, just as a smell test, the explanation about the firmware loading makes more sense since ndiswrapper is loaded before NetworkManager even starts and my dmesg log spits out the error messages (I forget what they were exactly) before the networking init script runs. In these cases, I don't think it creates the wlan0 device at all.

The current user of the laptop with the wireless dongle is happy that it works, but just has to remember to always shut down the PC instead of rebooting.

I doubt that all these problems are really the same bug.
Please report your problems seperately. It is very likely that the initial problem in the original bugreport is solved. Therefore I'm closing this bug.

All others who still have problems should file a new bug. The initial reporter can reopen this bug if he still experiences it.
