Bug Description

i noticed that nautilus on Ubuntu 11.10 show all files with wrong calculated size

for example
when i have the ISO file of Ubuntu Server AMD64 , the real size is 682MB , but nautilus shows the file with 715MB , so i opened the properties and saw the bytes 715,436,032 bytes , so divide it on 1024 twice so you get the 682MB , so nautilus calculated wrong !!!

and the same with all files

Sorry, these days Nautilus uses MB=10^6 bytes, not 2^20 - see discussion:

That is very confusing and problematic in work environments where reporting the "real" size of files is important.
Is there a way to revert this behavior for individual users/computers ?

Thanks.

I agree, however I'm not aware of a way of changing it - may be ask in some of the gnome channels/forums etc

what you get now is the real size, 1kb = 1000 bytes, it's a SI unit, 1kbi = 1024 bytes so your iso is 715MB or 682MBi, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_prefix

I think that the problem here is that Nautilus stills shows "MiB" instead of "MB"

It seems like Nautilus used binary units (MiB) before but switched to decimal units (MB) in Oneiric. Some translations (e.g. spanish) still use MiB though, so the number and the units do not match in the translated nautilus. So not a nautilus bug but a translation one.

I propose to be created gconf configuration options. See: "<a href="http://askubuntu.com/questions/7882/can-the-nautilus-properties-page-show-size-in-bytes-for-multiple-selects-and-fo">Can the Nautilus Properties page show size in bytes for multiple-selects, and for directories?</a>"

I agree with #13, if we make it a configuration option (maybe even a hidden one) we can adhere to the units policy and still keep power users such as myself happy.
