Bug Description

Here's a link to a photo for illustration (http://i.imgur.com/kctfB.png)

Notice all the blank space in the right side of the Nautilus window? This picture shows a Nautilus folder with 14 items in Icon-View. Yet the icons will only display in List view despite the fact that there is a large amount of free space to the right where icons could be presented from left-to-right.

Bug = valuable space that could be used to present icons is wasted when users enlarge icons in Icon-View.

I can see that the icons don't show as side-by-side when the nautilus screen is big enough (maximized, in my case), and the icon size is set to 400%. All other sizes seem to show icons side-by-side as expected.

summary: - Nautilus shows Enlarged-Icons in list-view
+ Nautilus doesn't show icons side-by-side in icon view at 400% icon zoom

Brendan,

what is your icon zoom set to? if you scale it down below 400%, do the icons show as side-by-side?

Yes, the icons show as side-by-side except when enlarged to maximum "Ctrl++" setting (allow me to explain):

I do not know what percentage the "zoom" is set to because unlike on Natty, Oneiric does not present a "%" setting in the nautilus toolbar. What I did was open Nautilus with the default settings and used "Ctrl++" to enlarge the icons to maximum.

I have a bunch of mp4 video files stored in a folder. Unfortunately, Nautilus is not displaying thumbnails of any of the videos. So I took a screenshot from each of the videos and gave the screenshot the exact same name as the video, then sorted both the jpeg and mp4 files by name. So the end result is I have a folder which contains a jpeg (which shows a thumbnail) next to an mp4 file which does not show a thumbnail. I enlarged the icons as large as they will go so that I can easily see the content of the jpeg and so know what the content of the mp4 video file is.

If I press "Ctrl++" until the icons will go no bigger, I get what is depicted in the image I linked to in my bug report. Once the icons are maxed out zoom wise, if I then press "Ctrl+-" a single time to lower the zoom one level, then the icons line up left-to-right. Unfortunately, this icon size is too small to make it easy to tell what the video content is. So I need the largest size.

I used a laptop with Live CD to report the bug. But it is exhibiting the exact same behavior as my Desktop computer (which does not have internet connection at the moment).

This is a long standing bug. It also affects ubuntu-10.04, 10.10, & 11.04.

I know a lot of ubuntu users would appreciate it if this long-standing bug got fixed before too much longer.

more like a dup of bug 589433, which is tracking upstream bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=552093 which is about the wasted space between icons on the icon view. marking it as dup, thanks.
