Bug Description

ISO testing: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20110901/oneiric-desktop-amd64.iso

Testcase: Install (entire disk) http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Install/DesktopWhole

After booting to the desktop, the "Examples" folder icon and "Install Ubuntu 11.10" icon on the desktop are layered on-top of each other, which is messy and possibly confusing. Attached is a screen shot of the bug.

I haven't been able to make this happen in a VM for testing. My best guess was that it might be possible to trigger this by making sure that those two .desktop files have identical mtimes, but that doesn't seem to trigger it for me. Perhaps it's also resolution-dependent, though, as something like this would explain why you don't see this every time.

In any case, as far as I know, casper has no direct control over this; it just drops some files into place in /home/ubuntu/Desktop/. nautilus is responsible for drawing the desktop, and anything we do in casper would at best be a workaround. Reassigning over to nautilus and the desktop team.

That's not only live ISO testing. I've been having this very problem on my (1024x600) netbook since Oneiric (or was it Natty ?) and it's still there in Precise Beta :

- Right after login, I always have the 3 topmost icons on my desktop OK, while the lower-end icons are all "piled" on top of each other.

- I usually right-click the desktop then "sort icons by name", that fixes the issue... until newt login where the mess is back.

So that's definitelly not a live-CD issue, but a more general Ubuntu desktop issue.

Hello!

I have tested on live usb persistent precise-desktop-amd64.iso 20120318 c15c06ee3e1a7606cfd3c950bb9025a7

For copy files on the desktop, the icons are overlapping.

I think, nautilus has issue

It happened to me testing while carrying out a live usb persistent key test on iso http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20120419.1/precise-desktop-amd64.iso, after rebooting to verify the history of firefox was kept (as it says in the test case) I found the two icons overlapped.

The first time you boot the live USB persistent key, everything is ok, when you reboot you get the overlaped icons.
