The crash happened upon creating a folder while intensive disk access from another application had taken place. Prior the crash occurred, some weird behaviour in nautilus window had been noticed: on ca. 30% of occasion a newly created "untitled folder" was shown initially as a file, and the first renaming attempt failed.
