Bug Description
Attaching an USB drive to my laptop normally brings up an icon on the desktop which allows me to access that drive. In case of an error while mounting the drive, nothing happens at all - not even a notification of the failure or why it failed. The system log shows following messages:
Nov 19 01:38:21 localhost kernel: [17288890.176000] usb 5-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Nov 19 01:38:21 localhost kernel: [17288890.312000] usb 5-8: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Nov 19 01:38:21 localhost kernel: [17288890.312000] scsi3 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Nov 19 01:38:32 localhost kernel: [17288901.036000] usb 5-8: USB disconnect, address 6
Nov 19 01:38:32 localhost kernel: [17288901.036000] 3:0:0:0: scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery
It would be good practice to inform the user about the failure - in this case a NTFS file system which was not cleanly shut down.

Unless the initial reporter has installed usbmount (it's an alternative usb mounting script in the universe repository), it's not usbmount.
usbmount is *not* installed on my system.

I have the same problem with an external usb HD with ntfs FS.
I don't know how to see the system logs about that.
I have installed ntfs-3g and I had to mount it manually.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu relelase? Thanks in advance.
Also this seems more like a wishlist, so if you can reproduce it we would marked it as wishlist.
Thanks
I still have the issue using gutsy with all latest fixes applied.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue , in the default Ubuntu 9.10 install , that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of the project.
this is a new feature request so not a papercut
For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https:/
Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.
