Bug Description

You can use the left panel and the 'Go' option to navigate so the icons are unnecessary.
It also cleans up the top navigation bar.

I agree that the 'Home' and 'Computer' icons in the navigation bar needlessly duplicate functionality found in the side pane.

Since this does not negatively impact the user experience, just clutter up the navigation bar somewhat, this is not a paper cut.

Please keep in mind that not all users use the side pane. But out of the box, side pane is present.

Maybe instead of removing them outright, the option could be added to hide them, in the same way it's possible to show certain icons on your desktop. That way, the default installation is a little less cluttered, but then hiding the side pane and using these icons can also be considered aesthetically pleasing. Giving the user the option to reveal these icons would keep everyone happy in this case.

Upstream have closed the report since this has been fixed in Gnome 3.0. Ubuntu will not be shipping Gnome 3.0, so that leaves this bug unresolved at our end. Are we going to implement this as an Ubuntu patch, or shall we let it slide. Personally, I think making the display of these two icons in the toolbar optional, rather than outright removing them, would be a good idea since it means that users who do not wish to use the sidebar (because of screen size issues or whatever) can choose to have easy access to these locations.

Chris, In such cases, we wait for gnome 3.0 :-)
It's not necessary that the bug get fixed in this Natty cycle.
