Bug Description

I found a setting in gconf-editor:

/desktop/gnome/background/picture_opacity

The default is set to 100, but changing the value doesn't seem to have any effect. If I set it to e.g. 50, I expect the wallpaper to be half transparent, showing whatever is underneath, respecting the colors I've chosen for

/desktop/gnome/background/primary_color
/desktop/gnome/background/secondary_color

and the value chosen for

/desktop/gnome/background/color_shading_type

Those last three values work as expected, but I only see a background color if I disable the background picture. I cannot see any background color just by reducing the opacity of the background picture.

Using Ubuntu 10.10, GNOME 1:2.28+1ubuntu4, gconf-editor 2.32.0-0ubuntu1. Not sure which package this would be in.

I guess translucency is not supported, and the bug is that the key is there at all.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

Changing the value to 25, or even 0 (zero), has no effect. After the change, I tried restarting nautilus (nautilus -q) and the desktop refreshes but the background picture stays fully opaque.

I am running Ubuntu 11.04.

Setting this to Confirmed as it also affects me on Natty, and the reporter has also answered the last question, about whether it does still affect Natty.

The only reference of the "picture_opacity" gconf key is removed by below commit from Nautilus. Maybe this is not a bug (or feature request) of Nautilus.

    background: refactor code into NautilusDesktopBackground

    Remove the DirectoryBackground->EelBackground->GnomeBG abstraction and
    add a new object, NautilusDesktopBackground, which is a thin wrapper
    around GnomeBG, which takes care of handling background changes.
