Hi there.
OK I recap the situation...
I was on 10.04 updated when I upgraded to 10.10 beta. When on 10.10 beta all
was OK.
It's just overnight that when I tried to launch Home or Documents etc from
Places that I was quite surprised
to see VLC launched, I tried a few times VLC was launched instead of Home or
Documents etc.
I removed VLC completely. I tried to launch Home etc and Home etc was
correctly launched.
I re-installed VLC and again whan launching Home etc VLC would be
launched...
I then have had only the option to launch Home via Places > Computer or via
the terminal with the command line "nautilus" .
Now and then after updating I would try to launch Home etc via Places
without success until the time when even VLC which was launched
instead of Home etc would not be launched! When I go to Places > Home or
Documents etc NOTHING HAPPENS AT ALL!
I removed again VLC but to no avail...
I guess that the only way out is going to format the HDD and re-install
Ubuntu from scratch?
Unless someone can see a better way out?
Thanks for your cooperation.
Laurent.

Hi there.
Thanks for your answer.
I did it as you said but to no avail unfortunately.
A screenshot of the terminal when I do as you say...nothing happens.
I went to synaptic and marked nautilus for reinstallation nothing has
changed...

to reproduce this bug. right click on any folder, select 'open with other application' select any app from there and click 'open' ('remember this application for "folder" files' should be ticked). the app that you selected to open the folder will open. now if you open your home dir or any sub-dir in your home from 'Places' menu the associated app will open.

To solve the problem: right click on any folder, select 'open with other application' a dialog will pop, there select 'file brower' and click open. now everything should be back to normal.
