How are you deleting trash?

Righ click on the Garbage Bin icon, & select Empty Garbage Bin.

Afterwards, ~/.Trash should be empty.

I did it; right click on the icon and select "Empty" but files don't remove.

please paste results of

whoami
ls -ld ~/.trash
ls -ld ~/.Trash

Also, what do you get when you right click the garbage applet, & select "About"

I think I had the same problem. It said there was 1 item. But there was none in it.
In the file .gnome/gnome-vfs/.trash_entry_cache it seems it caches information about the trash can. There was a line pointing to a patch that did not exist anymore. When I deleted the file, and reloaded the trashcan applet by removing/adding it (maybe logout would work too) it was working probably again.

Graphic solutions not work; I need to delete the files through

$ rm -rf .~/.Trash/*

I'm using Edgy too. And the problem appeared again.
Removing ./.gnome/gnome-vfs/.trash_entry_cache fixed it though.

If you get the problem again could you attach your .trash_entry_cache to a comment?

Since I uploaded my Ubuntu to Edgy, this problem don't appear.

mruiz@rath:~$ cat .gnome/gnome-vfs/.trash_entry_cache
/dev/shm -
/proc/bus/usb -
/var/lock -
/var/run -
