2009-12-16 14:18:02 Sense Egbert Hofstede summary Safely remove drive fails to unmount if data was written to drive. Unhelpful error message when trying to unmount busy device
2009-12-16 14:28:16 Sense Egbert Hofstede description Binary package hint: devicekit-disks Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64 WD passport 500GB USB drive Safely remove drive fails to unmount if data was written to drive. (safely unmounts if no data is written to drive) There is a popup with the animated writing to disk. When that completes, there is a new popup with: Unable to stop drive Failed to eject media; one or more volumes on the media are busy. The drive is not unmounted and still shows up as sdc1 root@Imperial-Command:~# fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0xa059ec2b Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 61 489951 83 Linux /dev/sda2 62 60801 487894050 83 Linux Disk /dev/sdc: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x6da154e0 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 60801 488384001 c W95 FAT32 (LBA) root@Imperial-Command:~# If you try to unmount a busy device you will get an error message. However, that error message is completely useless to people without a specific knowledge, i.e. knowing how to use the 'lsof' command. Ideally a dialogue would show up showing what processes are preventing you from unmounting it, including a "Force" button and PolicyKit integration. However, this is a bit of work, so a temporary solution could be to make the error message clearer, e.g. "The device you're trying to unmount is currently still in use by one or more applications. Please close those first." The original description stated that the error message mentioned above is only triggered when there has been data written.
