Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus 2.28.1 (1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1) - Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala"

When checking the "Use Compact Layout" option in Nautilus preferences under "Icon View Defaults", closing preferences and browsing folders then turning Compact layout off, instead of displaying icons in normal, spaced layout, Nautilus "remembers" the compact layout for all the folders you visited when having it turned on and displays other folders normally. Restarting, refreshing and changing the option back on and off changes nothing.

It is reproducible apparently. I don't know if it's really a bug but it's confusing, especially for inexperienced users.

Open any folder with enough folders and files to browse different pages, then go in Nautilus' preferences, check "Use Compact Layout" then close preferences and browse a few folders with other folders or files in them. Icons are displayed with compact layout. Fine. Then return into Nautilus prefs, turn off the compact layout option, then browse the folders you visited before : They are still displayed with compact layout but not those you didn't open with compact layout on.

I realized that if you right click in the Nautilus window and go to the "Arrange Items" menu, the option "Compact Layout" is automatically checked for all the folders you visited before.
Maybe it's done on purpose but in my humble opinion I think it's confusing for the user.
