Bug Description

Thumbnails of ogg files are quite bad, in Nautilus. When the cursor is above a ogg file, a small music emblem appears.

Yet, if the format file is ogg vorbis the first 30 seconds aren't played.

If the format file is ogg theora, the first 30 seconds of the movie (image and sound) aren't played, even the first 30 seconds of the movie sound only aren't played. Only the first image of the movie is drawn.

In a nutshell, nautilus thumbnails ogg (vorbis/theora) filehave to be fixed.

I noticed this too (e.g. on wavs). On another distro (http://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14263 ) the facility to preview various files in nautilus was provided by nautilus-media (http://thomas.apestaart.org/projects/nautilus-media/ ). Unfortunately nautilus-media is/was buggy and seemingly unmaintained (nor does it appear to be packaged for breezy).

If there is no preview facility on hover (which was always an unusual feature of nautilus) then the additional emblems should not appear on hover and only prelighting should be done. If it stays then a music symbol should not be shown on hover when an ogg file is actually a video...

Thanks for your bug. nautilus-media is deprecated since GNOME 2.10, totem is doing the preview now. This bug is due to those bugs:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167946 : ogg preview not working
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302757 : nautilus doesn't do the difference between the different ogg files

Is there any issue you have not covered by those bugs?

I agree with Sitsofe.

@ Sebastian

"Is there any issue you have not covered by those bugs?". I wrote about video thumbnail, not only the sound (e. g. vorbis) but the image too (e. g. theora).

It would need high video performances, wouldn't it? I hope it's madable.

upstream have stated they don't want to do graphical mouseover because that tend to be in the way when just moving your mouse on top of different files/folders, so it's not likely to happen soon.

I'm inclined to close the bug.

Closing the bug, since the Upstream developers have objections it's probably better to discuss this with them, if you feel strongly about it.

With regard to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302757 - "It turns out that the solution was to fix xdgmime and shared-mime-info. GnomeVFS and shared-mime-info HEAD will work correctly, i.e. always sniff."
