Bug Description

In Windows, if the user wants to hide a file or a directory he simply has got to change the attribute of it to "hidden".

In Ubuntu, if the user wants to hide a file he cannot do it simply with a mouse-click. He has got to create a file called ".hidden" in the same directory where he has the files he wishes to hide. Then he has to add the names of files & directories to that file, one per line.
It would be nice if you add a script to Nautilus for doing this process automatically with one click.

On this german blog, for example, the author has put a script, I have not tested it yet. But there are surely others on the internet or You can build an original one.

Thank you for the bug report.

In order to process this request we need to know why you require this feature.
What situations is it useful in? Why are existing features not sufficient?

Hi! I'm not the original reporter of this enhancement but I agree with it. I
think it should be more easy to hide some folders or files. For example, if you
install an application like Google Earth a new folder is created at /home and
you never use it. I don't like to see that folder every time I open my Home
Directory.

Before I learned there where some files and directories hidden, and before I
learned how to hide something, I couldn't hide that folder.

For new people to Linux, like I was, I think it would be great to be able to
hide something like this Google Earth folder with one or two clicks. I think
that we have to made Linux as easy as possible.

Thanks for the additional information.

Apps shouldn't go creating directories in /home/<user> that's what .config and .local are for. In that sense, this enhancement would be a workaround for bugs in other software.

My usability concern about this is that users might hide files and directories and then forget where they are located, or might not realise how to make them visible.

Rereading the bug report, I don't think scripts facilities is the correct component. Adjusting.
