Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.04 i386 (FRESH INSTALL)
P4 2.2 GHZ
512MB
IDE DVD Burner

these are the steps I execute:

-turn on the PC
-login

-Wait for a moment and then insert a CD (blank, with info etc...)
 or
-Use the PC for a while (1 hour or 2) an then insert a CD

The result is a Desktop without response , I can't do right click on desktop area and the desktop icons dissapear. The Panels still works i can navigate trough the windows that I opened (firefox, terminal) .
The PLACES menu shows an item with the icon of a CD and the name of that CD so I click the item , Nautilus tries to open a window but after a while nautilus just quit.
I remove the cd and I restart my user session to have my Desktop working again.

after insert a blank cd
#dmesg
[ 4439.967716] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
[ 4439.967726] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0

[ 4439.969908] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
[ 4440.042251] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!

wait for a couple of minutes and then try to open a location with nautilus with the CD still inside.
#dmesg

I can't read or burn any CD.

Darkshu.

I'm seeing the exact same problem on my PC. It also prevents you from open nautilus or ejecting the drive. The hardware is fine and it occurs with any CD.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
