It's difficult to save a Nautilus search

Bug #32542 reported by Celso Pinto on 2006-02-22

nautilus (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Currently, the only way there is to save a file search in Nautilus is to click on the "Save Search As" menu item under the File menu. This isn't very obvious and having this option near the "Empty Wastebasket" menu item doesn't help.

Since the search window already has a Reload button, would it be possible to add a "Save As" button below it? This would be more intuitive and easier to find.

Thanks for your bug. I'm not sure that's used enough to justify having it on the UI that way all the time but I've forwarded it upstream:

Just a quick comment related to this:

it would actually make things easier if the help system at least told you *how* to save searches.

Quoting from the Nautilus help file, chapter "Searching For Files", section "Saving Searches":

Nautilus searches can also be saved for future use. Once saved, searches may be reopened later. Figure 6-12 shows a user with three saved searches, browsing one of them.

Saved searches behave exactly like regular folders, for example you can open, move or delete files from within a saved search.

It does not actually say *anywhere* how to save a search, i.e. "To save a search, go to File>Save Search As..."

I think KDE has the best option for this:

You can bookmark searches. Just visit the bookmark to perform the search again.

I've forwarded that suggestion as a comment on the upstream bug

As of today, its possible to bookmark a search, but the bookmark brings back the last searched string, instead of restoring the bookmarked string.
