Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

When double clocking on an executable file that has the file extension .bin an error appears saying there is no application associated with this file type

Instead, Nautilus should of course execute the file

Thanks for taking the time to report this.
Could you check under File->Properties->Permissions if "Allow executing file as program" is checked?
This could well be the solution to your problem.

Of course this box is checked. I meant that when I wrote "When I click on an _executable_ file..."

When I rename the *.bin file to *.run or just remove the extension it executes just fine

Can you tell us what the MIME type or content type of the .bin file is? This could be due to Nautilus not knowing this type of file is executable due to someone else registering the .bin extension for some other program/reason.

Nautilus says:

bin document (application/x-extension-bin)

"file" says:

/home/tim/Downloads/Savage2Install-1.5.0-i686.bin: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

When I rename the file to *.run nautilus says:

Programm (application/x-executable)

So what other information do I have to provide to change the bug status?

I'm closing this task because as it is now it doesn't seem to be necessary to report it to upstream 'shared-mime-info'. Upstream was already notified via the Nautilus bug report.
