nautilus no longer generates thumbs for AI files

Bug Description

In Gutsy, .AI (Adobe Illustrator) files had thumbnail icons generated. In Hardy, no icon is generated.

Nautilus correctly identifies AI files as PDF format, and other PDF files get thumbnail icons. The "file" command returns the 'application/pdf' mimetype which is also expected. An interesting side note - if I rename the file.ai to file.pdf, it is thumbnailed properly and it will retain the thumbnail icon when renamed back to file.ai

This was after a clean install of Hardy.

Chris

and don't specify the ubuntu version in the title, it looks like the issue is specific to hardy otherwise where intreprid has the same bug most likely for example

After further poking around, newly created XCF files are getting thumbnail icons but the ones I copied over from a backup are not. Simplt opening an XCF in GIMP (not saving) seems to trigger icon creation. AI files do not get a thumbnail icon either way.

I've attached one AI file and one XCF file. The AI is newly created, the XCF was extracted from a .tgz archive created with the command 'tar -czf folder.tgz /folder' and then right-clicked and told to "extract here" in nautilus.

are you sure nautilus ever thumbnailed those adobe illustrator images? that doesn't seem to be a nautilus bug but rather a request to have something thumbnailing those

I'm 99.999% sure this was happening in Gutsy. I remember sometimes having to select the file before it was thumbnailed, and I definitely would have remembered the generic text icon that I'm getting now.

I just had someone confirm that thumbnail icons are generated for AI files in Gutsy, but only after the file is clicked or selected. This behavior - while not optimal - is preferable to the new behavior in Hardy: no icon at all.

I use Ubuntu as a graphic designer and this is slowing me down a bit - I haven't been able to figure out how to call evince-thumbnailer manually or I'd just do that and call it a day :)

This works:

gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/application@illustrator/command -t string "evince-thumbnailer -s %s %u %o"

/etc/gconf/schemas$ gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/application@illustrator/enable -t boolean "True"

the bug seems to be an upstream issue, could you open it on bugzilla.gnome.org too?
