This issue appears to be reproducible when accessing a directory with a large amount of files. For me this is the Camera subdirectory in the DCIM directory.

Steps taken:
1. Connect the Samsung device to any USB port (2 3.0 ports available, 1 2.0)
2. Initiate file transfer on the Samsung S9 by selecting the following options:
--"USB controlled by" changed from "This phone" to "Connected device"
----Permissions pop up asks "Allow access to phone data? The connected device will be able to access data on this phone."
----Select Allow
--"Use USB for" changed from "Charging phone only" to "Transferring files"
3. Initiate browsing through Nautilus by opening Files >> Samsung Android >> Phone
4. Open and close all available directories.
5. Open DCIM
6. Open Camera
7. Operation times out
8. Syslog is filled with the attached messages.
9. Phone becomes inaccessible until it's unplugged and plugged back in.

Attached logfile.

Thanks for the steps, the "times out' step relies on having a device hitting the problem then...
