I did manage to take a look earlier and this seems to be a GTK bug so I've reported it:

Based on the response I believe this cannot be fixed without using the new GtkPopovers (which was committed to GTK only ~14 hours ago).
I don't really know what GTK version is going to land in Trusty but I'm guessing it won't be anywhere near that recent, right?

indeed not, trusty is going to ship with 3.10. Was the "old" nautilus having that same issue? If not how did it work around it?

Nemo 2.0.8 doesn't have this issue and as you probably know it's derived from Nautilus 3.4

On the other Nautilus (version 3.4.1) in Precise also can't be closed when the type-ahead entry is open.

Ok, so it seems that's not a new issue/a regression compared to 12.04, which means it's probably fine if we don't fix it this cycle either... it would still be interesting to see what nemo is doing though

It is also worth noting that Nemo 1.8.4 that is available in Trusty universe has this issue so it was resolved after that version.

The newer 2.0.8 release can be installed from this PPA:

I just tested nemo 1.8.4 (on trusty) and the window won't close if the
type-ahead entry is shown.

Ah, sorry I mixed up the versions being put to test.

Just tried with Nemo 2.0.8 and the window /does not/ get closed. What
happens is that the type-ahead entry disappears after a short while.

*Off-topic* BTW, on checking this out, I discovered that Nemo crashes if I
open the About dialog. Not sure if the bug has been filed at the least.

I assume that you were testing this in VirtualBox (daniel@daniel-vbox) so I also checked what will happen when running in virtual machine. In VirtualBox I couldn't close Nemo with type-ahead entry open.

I don't know why in my real Ubuntu install it works but in VirtualBox doesn't.

@Daniel: I'm not sure that bug is worth spending too much efforts on, as GTK upstream said it has to do with X11 limitation, and it's probably there forever, not something that regressed or is important to fix for the LTS

Yes this bug was always present in Nautilus and I also think that it isn't important.

@Daniel: You don't have to install Trusty. Live CD will suffice and you can use grml-rescueboot which creates an entry in GRUB for booting directly from ISO image.
