Bug Description

When in icon view Nautilus will not smartly use the available space in the window white area. As you can see in the attached screenshot there is room for 5 or 6 columns of icons but Nautilus only shows 2.
The more you zoom in the more the use of space become inefficient.

I'm not seeing this issue using nautilus in focal or impish. I've tested using nautilus in both full screen mode and normal mode and the file icons fill the usable space in the expected manner. So I'm assuming that this issue was fixed in later releases as it has been almost eight years since this bug report was raised. I don't see any pointer as to which version of nautilus might have been affected.

If anyone still see an issue they should report a new bug by entering the following command in a terminal

  ubuntu-bug nautilus

and also report the bug upstream directly to the GNOME developers:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues
