nautilus menus do not show under certain circumstances

launching nautilus as user doesn't show items in the menu bar. i.e File, Edit all show up, but the dropdown's are empty.
launching nautilus as root show's these items.
Perhaps it has something to do with my user preferences, or user Bookmarks.
I could not find any other bugs or concerns about this.
