Bug Description
When for example we set a custom icon for a folder and then add this folder to the bookmarks, the folder in the left panel will have the default "folder" icon, if we click on it the icon is updated but if we kill nautilus and reopen it, the icon will be gone again.

Can you please post information on what version of nautilus you are using as I can not reproduce this problem. The icon always shows for me. Also where is the custom icon you are using located? Is it on a different drive (mount) to ubuntu? Is it in a different users home folder from the user you are logged in as?
