Bug Description

Sometimes I get this message. "There was an error while getting the sharing information" bla bla bla something about samba.....

I cannot reproduce it because it sometimes occurs. Especially when I right click on a folder and see its properties.

My version is Ubuntu 8.10 with all updates.

I am new to Linux.

Samba is not installed, not running.

I am concerned somehow may be it can be a intrusion attempt or something like that?

I got the same error today, on a 2-day old Ubuntu 9.04 install. However, my home directory stems from a previous installation, in which I used to share this folder.

How to reproduce (i think):

- share a folder (installs services)
- uninstall samba services
- go to the folder and open properties window

OK what i said above is bullshit.

Also the removal of /var/lib/samba/usershares does not trigger the error. Still i suspect that it has something to do with the previous sharing of this folder in another ubuntu-installation.

Does Nautilus store redundant information about sharing in any way?

OK I also got the error on Ubuntu 9.04 (64 bits), fresh installation.
The problem disappeared the minute I installed samba

$ sudo aptitude samba

Still, the error message from Ubuntu is not very helpful when people have not installed the "samba" package yet and wish to share some directory. Ubuntu should at the very least say "sharing of directories requires the installation of a new software package, do you wish to proceed and install that package now?" or something like that. You get the point.

The defect is genuine, and hopefully not hard to fix.

my 2 cents.

I believe this problem occurs because Samba is not running. Rest assured, it is
definitely not an intrusion attempt.

Could you upload a screenshot of this problem the next time it happens, please?
Where does this message show up? In a window of its own? Or in the properties
dialog?

Could it at least be possible to close this awful popup?
