Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

i am using ubuntu 8.04.1 with all of the latest updates applied as of this post.

i used apport so some stuff is attached

steps to repeat:
in nautilus, right click on a folder and select "Sharing Options"
check the box "Share this folder"
click "Create Share"

note: if you didnt install the packages u need 2 share folders and stuff, u should obviously

anyway when i do that i get this error. i attached a screenshot, mmkay?

anyway, i consider this bug to be pretty significant, because file sharing over a local network can be extremely important, especially to schools and other businesses and whatever, and i thought that this is the targeted audience for LTS releases. not only that, but this bug did not exist in the last release, 7.10, which means that its a regression. geez, i thought LTS releases were supposed to be exeptionally stable. actually, this release brought the most regressions i have ever seen in ubuntu's history. dont get me wrong, i love ubuntu, and i use it all the time, which is why i dont like finding so many bugs in it.

i hope this gets fixed :)

the ubuntu team is small and doesn't write the software which are distributed so has no real control on the changes happening in those softwares, GNOME and firefox had quite some changes this cycle, that was admitelly not the best timing to do a lts but the lts was decided before than upstream fixed their schedule for those changes

wow, i got a response already?! im very impressed!

also, no, i did not restart my session, and i was never told anywhere that i had to to get it working. therefore, i still think something can be changed here. i think that after installing samba, it should either give u that "u need 2 restart ur pc 4 the changes 2 take effect" system tray notification, or it should tell you after installing it that you need to restart your session or start the daemon manually for it to start working

however, even better than all of those, how about once its done installing, it just starts the samba service and stuff on its own? this makes the most sense and seems kinda obvious now.

anyway, i recommend that after u finish installing it, it fires it up right away so that way people like me dont get confused and start putting a bunch of frowny faces in launchpad :(

i really hope u consider it, and make the changes and stuff, or just disregard me and post an excuse in the comments :)
