IIRC Ubuntu has a whitelist of applications allowed to use the system-tray, no? In that case, it's probably that dropbox is not in that whitelist. Otherwise I don't see any reason for it not to work as I see it in the GNOME 3 tray.

Same problem here on a fresh installation of ubuntu 12.04. Running Gnome shell. No dropbox indicator after installing the nautilus dropbox extension.

I had the same problem. It turned out that Dropbox requires the Notification Area applet, which isn't installed by default. Hold ALT + Win, right-click in the Gnome panel and add the applet. See if that solves the problem...

Same problem under 12.04 and Mate, except that I USDED TO HAVE the dropbox indicator in the notification area, but IT DISAPPEARED AFTER A REGULAR UPDATE.
Indeed, I have 12.04 and Mate on several computers, 32-bits and 64-bits. Those where I did not run yet the update still have the dropbox indicator. I just updated one of them, and there went the indicator... So chances are that the new version of a package messes things up.

I also have Mint 17 + Mate and Ubuntu 14.04 + Mate, and there, no dropbox indicator at all.

However, with caja-dropbox installed, the dropbox folder displays the sync status of each sub-folder and file (in all above configurations).

This bug seems to be still here. I have Ubuntu 16.04 running Gnome classic and no dropbox icon anywhere on the screen.
